The Bachelor's Life

Ft Lauderdale with Meow

With DJ Tree and Brian at one of my summer parties

For the nerd:

Of all the fun things you can do in collge that don't involve alcohol and the outdoors, my favorite pastime (and i mean this in utmost honesty) is to venture the stacks of the library and pick out a book with an interesting title and read it.

It is in this fashion that i came across this book called The Bachelor Life by George Jean Nathan. WHen i looked in the inside cover, i realized that this book has only been checked out 10 times since 1962, with me being the first of the millenium. That makes me even more inclined to finish it--it is as if i am on a mission to discover ancient knowledge long lost by humanity.

It was written by a bachelor (single man) who revealed some of the secrets and clear up certain misconceptions on the seemingly glamourous life of singles. At first, i thought it would be a memoir of some self-centered Cassanova-wannabe, but it turned out that it was very amusing. In particular, i like the way he observes social behaviors. The following passage is about staying up late:

"Since it is my firm personal conviction, learned in the school of hard experience, that if nothing amusing, interesting, or romantic happens be twelve o'clock it isnt going to happen after twelve, it is my own custom most often to deposit myself in the hay by that hour.

There was a time when late hours appealed to me, but that time passed when one day i took stock of what i had gone through in the name of diversion and stimulation...

My after-midnight statistics revealed that i had wasted time, money, and health as follows:

I had drunk at least four thousand drinks i didn't want.

I had held hands with a quorum of girls, not more than two of whom, at most, i would have felt like even saying hello to if i hadn't had the aforesaid four thousand drinks i didn't want.

I had got into numerous heated arguments about matters which ordinarily i wouldnt have been the least interested in and which i woudlnt for the life of me, if it hadnt been for my black eye, the next morning even faintly have been able to recall."

So i guess in general, i really like this book, because it is funny and somewhat insightful.

On that note, i will extend an invitation to all of you to go to Europe with DJ Tree and i this summer. Not only will you be able to spend 4 weeks (day and night) with the 2 sexiest men alive voted by People Magazine in 2007, you will also get to see Europe. And if i end up writing a journal about it, which will be a sequel to my first book, you will be in it (but it is highly debatable whether it is a good thing or not because i will make fun of you and reveal your darkest secrets). So let me know if you are interested, because we can really use an extra brain when we are torn between going to bed and another pitcher of lager.
